The most useful approach to use in critically analyzing The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway is Santiago as a Christ Figure.

I think this approach is the most appropriate because there are many elements that Santiago represents Christ Figure in the story. First, an evidence of Christ Figure is the situation that the old man carried the mast on his back. This situation similar to the situation with Jesus Christ who carried the cross on his back. This part describes Santigo as a Christ Figure. Second, Santiago's hands are injured in the middle of fishing, and Christ was crucified and his hands were hurt. Moreover, the injured his hands represents Christ. Third, a character of Manolin means a faithful disciple of Christ. Christ had 12 disciples, as known as the Apostles, and they were faithful disciples. So, Manolin represents a faithful disciple of Santiago. At the last, almost all parts or situations of The Old Man and The Sea implies Christ Figure of the Bible.

The main characters in Old Man and the Sea are Santiago, a fisherman and Manolin, a boy who helps him.

Three adjectives that describe Santiago are...old, unlucky, and confident that is shown in this statement "His hope and his confidence had never gone.". (pp.13)

Three adjectives that describe Manolin are...young, lucky, and kind that is shown in this action "The boy took the old army blanket off the bed and spread it over the back of the chair and over the old man's shoulders.".(pp.18)

The thesis statement I've chosen for Essay 1 is the following: Deciding goals and plans raises students' motivation. This is because we decide goals and plans, we will not be at a loss what to do, we can know what to learn, and we can confirm where we are or what we achieved.

How do "good" college teachers present information?

According to Meiland, a "good" college teacher presents information in the following way. In college, teachers present informations as belief, as theory, as hypothesis, sometimes as conjecture-as material supported to greater and lesser degree by argument and evidence. So, informations are not treated as unchanging fact but as beliefs or conclusions that have been reached on the basis of investigations.

I agree with Meiland's opinion. If teachers present information as fact, there is no room for students to think more about it. Students,in college, should think own self because college is not a place where students are not taught but also search for truth. For example, if students do not think actively, they can just memorize, can not improve their ability, in the end studying will decline. So, teachers should make students think and students should think own self.
